In the 60s and the 70s, the film industry in Pakistan had a rich pool of female singers to playback in movies; Mala Begum was of the top female voices in the country and along with Noor Jehan and Runa Laila, she ruled the hearts till the mid 70s. She sang the most number of duets with Ahmed Rushdi as well and on her 27th death anniversary, we bring to you her memorable solo hits as well as duets.
Dil Deta Hai Ro Ro Duhai (Ishq Par Zor Nahi)
Mala Begum’s first hit was filmed on Neelo and made people take notice of them as actress – singer.
Mujhe Aarzoo Thi Jiski (Naila)
Mala’s star began to rise with Pakistan’s first ever coloured film where she did playback for Shamim Ara and became a household name.
Yeh Samaa Pyara Pyara (Darshan)
Mala was equally popular in the East wing of Pakistan and playbacked for Shabnam in this classic film.
Akele Na Jana (Armaan)
Although the song was composed with Madam Noor Jehan in mind, music director Sohail Rana used Mala and the rest is history.
Bhooli Hui Hun Dastaan (Doraha)
In Doraha, Mala was on top of her game and made this song immortal with her vocals.

The tandem to Aye Jahan (in the same film) is regarded as an iconic number and helped in pushing the careers of Nadeem and Shabana forward.
Thehr Bhi Jao Sanam (Baazi)
Nisho made her debut in this movie and quickly Mala became her voice, and the move helped her career stay afloat in the 70s.
Kisne Tora Hai Dil Huzoor Ka (Rangeela)
This club number is even popular today due to its lyrics, composition and of course, Mala’s vocals.
Tu Hai Phool Mere Gulshan Ka (Phool Mere Gulshan Ka)
With the advent of newcomers, Mala’s career was on the decline but she managed to give hits even then, including this title song from the first multi-starrer to feature Nadeem, Mohammad Ali and Waheed Murad.
