The fans of Ahmed Rushdi celebrate the 34th Death Anniversary of the legendary playback singer today. Ahmed Rushdi is regarded as one of the most versatile playback singers of Pakistan, his ability to sing both happy and sad songs made him indispensable for more than 2 decades. Let’s take a look at some of his sad/medium numbers on the day he passed away, and relive his memories.
Akele Na Jana – Armaan (1966)
This is undoubtedly Ahmed Rushdi’s best ‘serious’ number even though it is over 50 years old. Composed by Sohail Rana, it was supposed to be the title track of a film named Akele Na Jana. Producer Waheed Murad asked Sohail Rana to give this song to his film rather than the other one and the rest is history. It not only enabled Sohail Rana to win Nigar Award but also immortalized him as a legendary music composer.
Haan Isi Mod Par – Doraha (1967)
The combination of Ahmed Rushdi – Waheed Murad – Sohail Rana delivered Doraha which was hailed as a musical hit when it was released. This sad number was filmed in Northern Areas as well and Waheed Murad’s picturization immortalized it, as did Pervez Malik’s direction.
Tujhe Apne Dil Se – Shehnai (1968)
This time it was Syed Kamal who picturised this wonder Sohail Rana number in Shehnai. Ahmed Rushdi’s vocals fitted all leading men of his times and Syed Kamal was one of those for whom he play backed extensively.
Aye Jahan Ab Hai Manzil Kahan – Chand Aur Chandni (1968)
Nadeem was junior to Syed Kamal, Waheed Murad and Mohammad Ali but he carved a place for himself in films thanks to beautiful songs, mostly by Ahmed Rushdi. This song from his 3rd film went onto become a hit and is still considered amazing after such a long time.
Aise Bhi Hain Meherban – Jaise Jantay Nahi (1969)
Nisar Bazmi’s use of least possible instruments was immortalized by Ahmed Rushdi’s vocals for this Ali-Zeb production where Mohammad Ali dazzled as his debonair self and the rest of the cast wondered what to do in the beautiful locations of Northern Areas.
Kuch Log Rooth Kar – Andaleeb (1969)
It was again Waheed Murad – Shabnam who entertained the audience with their chemistry; Nisar Bazmi was on top of his game in the flick and delivered great hits even after this movie. Do notice Waheed Murad’s red car that is considered to die for 4 decades later.
Aye Abr-e-Karam – Naseeb Apna Apna (1970)
Ahmed Rushdi received his 4th and final Nigar Award on this Lal Mohammad Iqbal number; Waheed Murad and Shabnam dazzle as the on screen pair in this song where the man of the house hopes for more rain so that his lady love doesn’t get a chance to go out. Interesting!
Dukh Main Aakhir – Pyaasa (1973)
Veteran actor Shahid was considered a threat to established actors in the 70s because he could act, dance and film songs just like the heavy weights of the era; Ahmed Rushdi sang a lot of songs for Shahid and this Nisar Bazmi number is one of those songs that went onto become popular.
Dil Ko Jalana – Mohabbat Zindagi Hai (1975)
A sad Waheed Murad, a sorrowful Ahmed Rushdi and M. Ashraf’s composition made this number something to die for; this song was one of the reasons why Mohabbat Zindagi Hai went onto become a huge hit – Tu Tu Ru Tu Ru Tara Tara and Mashriqi Rang Ko being the others.
Ik Main Hi Bura Hun Baqi – Apne Huay Paraye (1977)
Ahmed Rushdi was at his best even after the arrival of younger playback singers and that’s why M. Ashraf considered him for this song that went onto become a chart-buster.
