Move aside, Tobey Maguire. Leave the arena, Andrew Garfield. The newest Spider-Man in the form of Tom Holland is here and the way he has performed, he is here to stay. From the Marvel Titles (with the Spider-Man theme in the background) to the final post-credit sequence, this Spidey flick is the perfect homage to a hero who is our friendly neighborhood guy and loves his superpowers (and the suit, of course!). The Plot
The film takes over from where Captain America: Civil War left. Peter Parker (Tom Holland) is still a high school student with a hot Aunt May (Marisa Tomei) who cares about her nephew. On the other hand, Peter uses his suit from Stark Industries to masquerade as Spider-Man and save people in trouble; Tony Stark takes back the suit when he finds out that Peter has activated the suit’s upgraded version without his permission, leaving Spider-Man with just his superpowers. Even then, Peter goes against Adrian Toomes (Michael Keaton) who is not just supervillain Vulture but also the father of his love interest Liz. Does Spider-Man manage to save the world, does Peter find true love or does Vulture win the battle for the Evil, go and watch the film!
The Good
The best thing about this Spider-Man flick is that the Radio Active Spider doesn’t bite him, he doesn’t discover his powers and Uncle Ben doesn’t die a horrific death! Yes, Peter Parker is already a crime-solving superhero before the titles and has a best friend Ned (Jacob Batalon) who finds out his secret and helps him as the ‘Guy in The Chair’. Tom Holland brings the innocence required to play the friendly neighborhood superhero and when he teams up with the one and only Iron Man, things just get bigger and better. The Visual Effects that make things look larger than life in 3D, the Gadgets – both Iron Man’s and Spidey’s – and the grandeur of the villain Vulture are things to look forward to in the cinema. May the best team win!
The Bad
Spider-Man doesn’t use one of his most important superpowers and that is the Spidey Sense. There might be a reason for that but so far, it’s not known. There is no Mary Jane Watson till the climax of the film where we realize that a girl posing as Michelle might be (or might not be) MJ in the next flick. Michael Keaton impresses on his return to the comic world (he played Batman in 1989 and 1992) but he sounded like Sylvester Stallone in a few scenes. The background score by Michael Giacchino wasn’t as good as the last film where Hans Zimmer gave the audience something to remember by.
Verdict – 3.5/5
Tom Holland is the best thing to have happened to Spider-Man since forever. He not only looks the part of a student who struggles with everyday problems but also cares about all those who are dear and near to him. In Spider-Man: Homecoming, he discovers that he is a Superhero, with or without the suit and the powers given to him have a purpose – with great powers, come great responsibility. Peter’s development as a mature superhero begins when he loses the suit and that’s the moment he becomes Spider-Man, who finally gets the suit back because of his good work. A must-watch for all Spider-Man fans, and those who wanted him to be an Avenger!
